Remote Work Tools for Public Defender & Conflict Offices

Livingston County’s Defender and Conflict Offices have the important responsibility of providing representation in criminal, family, and surrogate court.

Seal of Livingston County New York.

For many years, the County used a software system called PDCMS to manage cases. The system posed numerous challenges to staff and administrators - including the inability to access cases from outside the building - and couldn’t provide optics into critical aspects of how the office operated. That all changed when the County adopted LegalServer.

A significant benefit for us in switching to LegalServer from PDCMS is our attorneys having access to the case management system from home, from court, and from any other location where they may need to access case files or discovery to review and discuss with clients.

In a world of increased remote work, the County can now access critical case information from anywhere. After successfully migrating from PDCMS to LegalServer, the Public Defender and Conflict Offices are also leveraging:

  • Built-in reporting for The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services (ILS), and
  • Ad-hoc reports to gain more visibility into what’s happening across the office.

Staff and attorneys now have a system that fits their organizational processes and adapts to changing needs. Having more efficient and effective systems is saving County staff over 1,000 hours per year, which they can reallocate into helping clients.
